High Point Athletes Of 2021 NCAA DII Indoor T&F Championships
NEW ORLEANS – The High Point Athletes of the Meet from the 2021 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships were announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday. Trevor Bassitt of Ashland earned the honor on the men’s side, with Cheyenne Williamson of Saginaw Valley State capturing the award on the women’s side.
Bassitt totaled 29.5 points at the meet, scoring more than any other men’s athlete at the Birmingham Crossplex, while Williamson notched 30 points as the highest-scoring woman at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Bassitt, a senior from Bluffton, had a historic meet as he left Birmingham with three national titles and two additional All-America honors. He completed four races in 70 minutes on Saturday, starting with his third place finish in the 60 in 6.76. He then won the 60H in 7.83 and the 200 in record breaking fashion, clocking 20.48 to set a new NCAA Division II record and meet record. Bassitt came back to anchor the victorious 4×400 in 3:10.15.
On Friday, he was part of the Eagle’s DMR that placed fifth with a time of 9:50.52.
In all, Bassitt’s 29.5 points accounted for about 42 percent of Ashland’s team total of 70. The Eagles claimed their second straight indoor national championships.
Williamson won three individual titles for the Cardinals at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships. The sophomore from Essexville, Michigan, first claimed the pentathlon title with 4113 points on Thursday. She bounced back from the combined events to win the long jump after soaring 6.35m (20-10) on her third attempt. Her third crown of the weekend came in in the 60H in 8.41.
With Williamson’s performances in the pentathlon and the long jump, she is now the No. 5 and No. 7 performer all-time in NCAA Division II in those disciplines, respectively.
Saginaw Valley State finished fifth in the team standings, with Williamson accounting for 30 of the team’s 35 points.
