National Athlete of the Week is an award selected and presented by the USTFCCCA Communications Staff at the beginning of each week to eight collegiate indoor track & field athletes, when applicable (male and female for each of the three NCAA divisions and the NJCAA).
Nominations are open to the public. Coaches and sports information directors are encouraged to nominate their student-athletes; as are student-athletes, their families and friends, and fans of their programs. Nominated athletes are noticed before those athletes found through searching TFRRS.
The award seeks to highlight not only the very best times, marks and scores on a week-to-week basis, but also performances that were significant on the national landscape and/or the latest in a series of strong outings. Quality of competition, suspenseful finishes and other factors will also play a role in the decision.
NCAA DIVISION I MEN – Terryon Conwell, Clemson
RS Junior | Short Sprints
Decatur, Georgia
If this is indeed a swan-song campaign for Clemson men’s track & field, athletes such as Terryon Conwell are going out with a bang.
Conwell, a redshirt junior from Decatur, Georgia, made a splash in his Tiger debut this past weekend after spending several years at Mississippi State.
He became the 10th best performer in collegiate indoor history over 300 meters when he clocked a time of 32.97 at the Orange & Purple Elite. That was a PR of more than a full second for him, as his previous best at the same distance was 34.11 from the UAB Blazer Invitational last year.
This is the first time in award history that any Clemson athlete has been named National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season.
NCAA DIVISION I WOMEN – Bethany Hasz, Minnesota
RS Senior | Distance
Alexandria, Minnesota
Bethany Hasz ran alone to the top of the national leaderboard.
Hasz, a redshirt senior from Alexandria, Minnesota, virtually soloed a 9:24.49 3K this past weekend at the Hawkeye Border Battle. While there were 10 other competitors in the field, Hasz pulled away early and won by 20.03 seconds. She put two seconds between herself and eventual runner-up Anastasia Korzenowski after one lap and extended the lead from there.
This is the first time that a female athlete from Minnesota has been named National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season.
NCAA DIVISION II MEN – Tanner Berg, Northern State
Senior | Throws
Watertown, South Dakota
Tanner Berg wasted no time getting his name on the national qualifying list.
Berg, a senior from Watertown, South Dakota, won the weight throw at the Northern State-Jamestown Dual on his first throw of the day with a toss of 20.34m (66-8¾). He earned the event crown by more than five meters over the next closest competitor. Berg now sits third on the NCAA Division II Descending Order List.
