Taking Stock Of The Indoor Record Books
All right, everybody: Let’s take a deep breath.
This has been a whirlwind of an indoor season thus far.
From The USTFCCCA InfoZone: Meets & Results | Records & Lists
Chances are that it’s only going to pick up in the final full month.
We don’t mean to alarm you, but there are less than four weeks until the start of championship season. It begins on the first weekend of March with the NAIA and NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and ends the following weekend with both the NCAA Division I and NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships (NOTE: Due to participation numbers, NCAA Division III canceled its championship meet scheduled for March 12-13 in Geneva, Ohio).
It’s high time to take stock of what has happened so far.
There have been two collegiate records set in 2021: KC Lightfoot of Baylor raised the pole vault standard to its current standard of 5.95m (19-6¼); Oregon demolished its previous all-time collegiate best in the distance medley relay by more than five seconds to 9:19.42, which is now also a world all-time best.
Christian Noble of Lee (Tenn.) took it amongst himself to rewrite the NCAA Division II record book. In three consecutive weeks, Noble notched the fourth best mile (4:00.60) and took down divisional records in both the 5000 (13:37.39) and the 3000 (7:51.46). Just about four seconds stand between Noble and a trifecta of divisional records (Kip Cheruiyot went 3:56.74 for the mile back in 1986).
All told, there have been 18 new additions to the record books this season when it comes to all-time performers: nine in the overall collegiate record book, seven in NCAA Division II, none in NCAA Division III and two in the NJCAA (Our NAIA record book is growing, but incomplete). Many of those athletes have turned in multiple efforts that earn favorable standing in the pantheon of all-time performances.
